It's Back to School Time

It's hard to believe that this coming Tuesday, August 24, marks the first day back to school for Columbus City School students.  Where has the summer gone?  It seems like only yesterday that I was watching fireworks at Red, White, & Boom.

Does anyone have any favorite summer 2011 memories?

Life, Above All

Chanda's SecretsChanda's Secrets, a powerful novel by Allan Strattan, has been turned into an award winning film titled "Life, Above All."

In Chanda's Secrets, Chanda, a 16 year-old girl living in a poor village in Southern Africa, must deal with personal tragedy as the AIDS epidemic affects those closest to her.  She must overcome the fear and shame that has taken over her community and face the truth head on.

In the film version, "Life Above All," the character Chanda is 12 years old, and is played by first time actress Khomotso Manyaka.

"Life Above All" is now playing in select theaters across the U.S.

Luxe to Get Hollywood Treatment

The LuxeGreat news for fans of Anna Godbersen's Luxe series: a film version of the best-selling books is in the works!  And the creative force for the movie is going to be the same group of people who created the "Gossip Girl" T.V. series!  Since the project is still in the early stages, it might be a couple of years before we get to see Elizabeth Holland on the big screen, but I think that it will be well worth the wait.

The Luxe follows the lives (and scandals) of a group of teenage socialites and their servants in Manhattan, N.Y. in the year 1899.  Fashion, gossip, and backstabbing abound in this dramatic series.  Check out the first book in the series here!

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II Movie Poster Revealed

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part IIA few days ago the first poster for the final Harry Potter film, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II, was made public.  It's a close up of a very intense looking Harry and Voldemort staring each other down amid bloody chaos.  The poster reads, "IT ALL ENDS 7.15."  Although it may be too early to tell, I can't help but wonder if most people are over the whole Harry Potter franchise and if they really care one way or another that the final film is being released this summer.  On the other hand, it is the final film, so maybe there will be a rebirth of Harry mania this July.

What about you?  Are you looking forward to seeing Dan Radcliffe play Harry one last time on the big screen?

Oscar Nominees Announced

OscarThe nominees for the 2011 Oscar Awards have been announced, and the "Best Picture" picks are:

Black Swan

The Fighter

Inception

The Kids Are All Right

The King's Speech

127 Hours

The Social Network

Toy Story 3

True Grit

Winter's Bone

Of all of the nominated movies I've seen The Social Network and The Fighter.  I thought that The Social Network was just ok, and wasn't blown away.  The Fighter (starring Mark Walberg and Amy Adams) was the best movie I've seen in a long time, and if Christian Bale doesn't win for Best Supporting Actor I don't know who will.

Seen any of the nominated movies?  If so, which one do you think will win "Best Picture?"  Any other award predictions?

Two-Headed Turtle

two-headed turtleA two-headed turtle has been found in a person's back yard in Manisa, Turkey.  It has two heads and four legs in one shell.  Because this is so rare, the turtle has been moved to a nature reserve where the public can view him.  The little guy(s) is only about a month old, but its species can live up to 75 years.

Release Date Set on Film Based on Teen Book

BeastlyBeastly (2011), based on the 2007 book of the same title by Alex Flinn, is set to be released in theaters on March 18, 2011.  The film stars Alex Pettyfer (you may remember him from Alex Rider: Operation Stormbreaker (2006)) as Kyle, a good-looking, rich teen whose massive ego is the only thing bigger than his bank account.

Anyway, Kyle is prone to picking on those whom he feels are beneath him, including goth girl classmate Kendra (Mary-Kate Olson).  What Kyle doesn't know is that Kendra has supernatural powers, and when he pulls a cruel prank on her, she reacts by casting a spell on him that turns him into a hideous creature.  The only way that Kyle can transform back to his hottie self is if someone falls in love with him for who he is on the inside.

Remind you a little of this?

The film also stars Neil Patrick Harris (How I Met Your Mother) as Kyle's blind tutor and Vanessa Hudgens as, you guessed it, Kyle's prisoner/love interest.

Has anyone read the book?  If so, what did you think?  Do you plan on seeing the movie?

National Book Award Winners Announced

MockingbirdThe 2010 National Book Award winners have been announced, and the winner of the "Young People's Literature" category is Mockingbird by Katheryn Erskine.  Not to be confused with Mockingjay of the wildly popular Hunger Games trilogy by Suzanne Collins, Mockingbird hasn't gotten much press up until this point.

The story centers around Caitlin, an 11-year old with Asperger's syndrome, a form of autism in which the affected person has serious difficulty with social interaction.  So Caitlin has a hard time understanding emotions and making friends.  And when her older brother dies, Caitlin has no idea how to deal the situation and wonders if she'll ever find closure.

Has anyone read Mockingbird?  What did you think?

Celebrity Authors

ElixirActress Hilary Duff has published her first novel.  In Elixir, privilidged teen Clea escapes the spotlight of her parents' celebrity by traveling around the world as a photojournalist.  But when her surgeon father disappears while on a humanitarian mission, Clea begins to see a shadowy, mysterious man in her photos.  This same man may be the key to her father's disappearance.

Duff isn't the only celebrity spreading her writing wings.  T.V. show host and former model, Tyra Banks, is currently working a new fantasy teen series, Modelland, that is set to debut in 2011.  The story will center around a girl who struggles to keep up in the beauty game at her elite supermodel school.

Meanwhile, actress and fashion designer, Lauren Conrad, has released Sugar and Spice, the final installment of her popular L.A. Candy series.  The series centers around four girls living in L.A. who are asked to star on a reality show (like The Hills), and plenty of jealousy, backstabbing, and drama ensues.  Conrad is now working on a spin-off series that will star the character Madison.

Has anyone read any of these titles?  If so, are you a fan?

Weird New Species Found

tube-nosed fruit ratThis tube-nosed fruit bat is just one of over 200 new species recently discovered in the remote forests of Papua New Guinea.  Finding so many new species is really rare in this day and age, so this is exciting news for scientists.

Personally, I think that the tube-nosed fruit bat looks a little like this guy.

What do you think?

Jack-O-LanternIt's officially October, and you know what that means.  It's time for hayrides, haunted houses, and candy corn sugar highs.  This is also the perfect time of year for curling up with a creepy book.

Check out these newer supernatural titles.  But beware!  If on a dark and stormy night you're enjoying one of these chilling reads and you hear a tap, tap, tapping on your window, it just might be a ghost of a librarian trying to tell you that your book is overdue.  Bwah, ha ha!

Here Come the Dragons

Firelight

First we were obsessed with vampires, then werewolves, then zombies, and now . . . dragons.  That's right, DRAGONS!

Firelight, the first in an exciting new trilogy by Sophie Jordan, is creating buzz amongst fantasy lovers who are looking for the next Twilight

The main character, Jacinda, is part of a tribe of drakis, dragons who take on human form to protect themselves from dragon hunters.  Jacinda is special because she is the only fire-breather born for hundreds of years.

After she breaks the "no fly" rule one too many times and puts her tribe in danger, Jacinda and her family must flee from the Cascades to the human world in Nevada.

There she meets Will, a young draki hunter who let her escape back in the Cascades.  Jacinda feels drawn to Will.  But the closer she becomes to him, the more she puts herself and the entire draki tribe in danger of being discovered for what they really are.

Has anyone read, or plan on reading, Firelight?

America's Got Talent Season Finale

America's Got Talent judgesLast night was the season finale of America's Got Talent 2010.  Over 14.3 BILLION people tuned in to see who got the most votes Tuesday night and would take first place.

The "Final Four" included Fighting Gravity, a black light performance group, Prince Poppycock, a opera singer/rock star/dandy/diva, 10 year-old singing sensation Jackie Evancho, and soulful singer/musician Michael Grimm.

Viewers nationwide, including myself, were stunned to see dark horse Michael Grimm beat out child-prodigy Jackie Evancho for first place and the $1 million grand prize.

Sadly, my personal favorite, His Highness Prince Poppycock, came in 4th place.

Fans: who were you rooting for?  Do you think the right person won?
